What Is 430 Stainless Steel Plate?

As one of the most widely used ferritic stainless steels, 430 stainless steel plate has numerous applications in interior and exterior projects where corrosion resistance is more important than strength. It ranges from automotive trim and kitchen appliances to oil refinery and roofing equipment. This is due to its good corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive environments and good resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Also, it has good formability and fabrication characteristics, inferior to austenitic stainless steel. For more details about stainless steel 430 sheets and plates, keep reading to see how it goes!

What Is 430 Stainless Steel Plate?

430 Stainless steel plate is a flat-shaped sheet made of 430 stainless steel coil.

Grade 430 is a commonly used ferritic, straight chromium, and non-hardenable stainless steel, containing high chromium and no nickel. It combines mild corrosion resistance with great ductility and formability. Furthermore, it has valuable resistance to heat and oxidation and is not susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. But this grade does not work harden rapidly.

C ≤0.12, Si ≤1.0, Mn ≤1.0, Cr 16.0~18.0, Ni < 0.75, S ≤0.03, P ≤0.04, N ≤0.1, Mo 2.00-3.00%

Something About 430 Stainless Steel Plate Processing

Hot Working

430 stainless steel plate can be hot worked (like forging) in the temperature range of 1500 to 1900° F. However it is susceptible to excessive grain growth if exposed to high temperatures for too long, which will cause ‘orange peel’ texture and reduce ductility. So it should be air cooled quickly to room temperature.

Cold Working

Stainless Steel 430 plate can be cold formed by bending, deep drawing, and stretch forming, but it does not work harden as rapidly as 301 or 304 stainless steel.

Heat Treatment

This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

Annealing can be done by heating to 815°C, soaking for 30 minutes per 25mm of thickness, furnace cooling to 600°C, then quickly air-cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.

Sub-critical annealing should be heated to 760-815°C and then air-cooled or water-quenched.

Welding

Grade 430 has poor weldability compared to most stainless steels due to the higher carbon content and lack of stabilizing elements, which require post-weld heat treatment to restore corrosion resistance and ductility. Here are some cautions:

Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.

Annealing at 790-815°C can relieve embrittlement of the heat-affected zone.

Grain refinement will not occur.

Machining

The stainless steel plate of this type is relatively easily machined. And machining can be enhanced if the following rules are adhered to:

– Cutting edges must be kept sharp as dull edges will cause excess work hardening.

– Cuts should be light but deep enough to prevent work hardening by riding on the surface of the material.

– Chip breakers should be employed to assist in ensuring the swarf remains clear of the work.

– Low thermal conductivity of austenitic alloys results in heat concentrating at the cutting edges. This means coolants and lubricants are necessary and must be used in large quantities.

Fabricating

Stainless steel 430 plates can be processed with the help of various cuttings such as laser cutting, plasma cutting, saw cutting, dynamic waterjet cutting, machine cutting, etc. Then leveling and polishing is done. Leveling can be done to reduce scrap and to provide special lengths with improved quality and shape dimensions.

What Are Properties of 430 Stainless Steel Plate?

When it comes down to it, there are many benefits associated with using 430 stainless steel plates across various industries. Let’s see them one by one.

1. Corrosion Resistance: Grade 430 is a general-purpose steel with good resistance to mild corrosive environments, including nitric acid and some organic acids. It attains its maximum corrosion resistance when in highly polished or buffed condition. In addition, its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is close to that of 304 stainless steel.

2. Heat Resistance: Grade 430 has good resistance to oxidation in intermittent service to 870°C and continuous service to 815°C. However, after prolonged heating at 400-600°C, this grade may become brittle at room temperature. This effect can be eliminated by annealing.

3. Processing Performance: It also possesses good formability capabilities so that it can be easily bent, stretched, or drawn into different shapes without losing its structural integrity. However, it is difficult to weld.

4. Mechanical Property

Tensile Strength > 450 Mpa
Yield Strength >205 Mpa
Elongation(%) > 22%
Hardness HV≤200 HRB≤88
Density 7.75g/cm3
Melting Point 1427℃

5. Thermal Conductivity: It has better thermal conductivity and a smaller thermal expansion coefficient than austenitic stainless steel. It is also resistant to thermal fatigue.

6. Magnetism: Stainless steel plate is magnetic primarily because it contains large amounts of ferrite. This is a compound crystal structure of ferrite and iron. While some stainless steels contain ferrite, they do not exhibit a strong magnetic attraction.

7. Cost-effective Solution: SS 430 sheet and plate costs significantly less than that of 304 grade as it contains no nickel. Therefore, it makes 430 stainless steel a good value choice in mildly corrosive environments, widening its usage in various applications.
